Technical cofounder vs agency vs venture studio
These options solve different problems. A cofounder joins the company, an agency sells a defined service, and a venture studio combines selection with an ongoing build relationship. Compare obligations before comparing speed.
A technical cofounder joins the company
A genuine cofounder takes broad long-term responsibility, receives meaningful ownership, participates in company decisions, and remains exposed to the venture beyond one release. This is not simply a cheaper way to buy engineering.
An agency delivers a contracted scope
An agency can be effective when the outcome, budget, acceptance criteria, and handoff are clear. The founder normally retains product direction and operating responsibility, while changes are handled through scope and fees.
A venture studio selects and shares risk
A studio evaluates opportunities before committing resources and can combine build fees, services, ownership, or revenue participation. The critical questions are who owns IP, who controls decisions, how long support lasts, and how either party exits.
Choose by relationship, not label
Ask who owns delivery, who makes product decisions, what happens after launch, how incentives work, and what the signed documents require. A familiar label cannot compensate for unclear accountability.
