Startup idea validation checklist
Use this checklist to turn a broad idea into an evidence-backed decision. A blank answer is useful: it identifies the next research task instead of hiding a critical assumption.
Problem and user
Can you name a narrow user, triggering situation, recurring pain, measurable consequence, and current workaround? Have you heard the problem in the user's own words without first pitching your solution?
Demand and alternatives
What are people already spending in money, time, risk, or manual effort? Which alternative would your product replace, and what switching cost must it overcome? What action has anyone taken beyond offering encouragement?
Wedge, distribution, and economics
Why is the first segment reachable? Which channel can repeatedly reach it? What makes the initial use case meaningfully better? Identify the buyer, expected value, likely price logic, and costly dependencies before building.
Founder and next experiment
What relevant expertise, access, shipped work, or operating commitment do you have? Define one next test, its evidence, its cost, and the decision it informs. Do not confuse completing the experiment with proving the company.
